Apocalypse Now Redux

The trophy/achievement for finishing the “Crash Site” mission is called “Never get off the boat”, which paraphrases one of Willard’s more quotable quotes in “Apocalypse Now”. Absolutely god***n right!

Suspicious Mannequin Behavior

This easter egg might have been admired by Alfred Hitchcock, the master of subtle terror. Whenever you begin a new match, the gender of the mannequins – in addition to their position and numbers – will change. Unnerving, no?

Top Gear Black Ops

On your way to the river boat in the “Crash Site” mission, you’ll pass some soldiers who are taking photos. A couple are guarding prisoners or on patrol. Check the names of the soldiers on patrol: Pvt. Clarkson and Pvt. Hammond. These are also the names of the hosts of “Top Gear”, a widely followed show about cars in the UK.

Treyarch Security Administration

The U.S.D.D. mission is more of a Pentagon walkthrough, so there’s little autonomy here. But you can notice the security checkpoint and see the metal detectors carry the official Treyarch brand.

“Kino Der Toten” Zombies Secret Song

Check around for 3 meteor rocks that emit a distinctive variable glow. (The color will vary as well) Since it’s a dimly lit atmosphere, check the video for a better idea of where each rock is located.

Upon finding each rock, press ‘X’ or ‘Square’ and your character will make a comment. The song “115” by Elena Seigman will play when you’ve collected all 3 rocks.

Take "Five with Eminem

No, that phone isn’t a hotline to Eminem (or Marshall Mathers either). But you can activate his tune “Won’t Back Down”, by pressing and holding ‘X’ or ‘Square’ upon seeing one of these fire engine red telephones. It’ll play during the match.

Hidden Film Reels

In Kino Der Toten (Cinema of the Dead) here’s how to change what’s on the film screen. Unlock the Pack-a-Punch projector room by rounding up three pals and fighting. The projector room is located above the theatre’s main entrance. On the stage is a Teleporter and that’s the only way to access the projector room. If you get all 4 players in the room at the same time, the Teleporter will shoot them to various rooms within the map. Before being sent back, you’ll have a few seconds to search for a film reel that’s hidden; in total, there are 3 reels.

You’ll enjoy some unsettling new clips when the reels are placed in the projector.

Dead Man's Pile

You may or may not see this egg during the “Numbers” mission. Players have reported discovering this stack of corpses (which they swear they didn’t kill) stuck in an unfrequented area of the level. Yet when the players went back to the location, the corpses had disappeared! Investigate for yourself … it might be part of some covert corpse conspiracy!

The Watermelon Returns

Not only are they nutritious and delicious, watermelons are also a mainstay of the Call of Duty games. They abound in Black Ops' campaign mode but don’t seem to have any special characteristics (like the exploding ones in Modern Warfare 2). Would Treyarch include so many simply for the sake of decoration?

The Teddy bear Returns

Teddy Bears are kind of like the unofficial mascots of COD easter eggs. They’re scattered through the campaign and multiplayer modes of 5 games at least. Although not sighted as of yet, they’re certain to show up in Black Ops missions. The beaten-up bear pictured above is from the Kino Der Toten zombie map. Find it in the first area on a balcony.

The Deer Hunter reference

One of the most harrowing scenes in film history is the Russian Roulette sequence in “The Deer Hunter” (1978) where Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken are captured and tortured. Here’s how Treyarch pays tribute to that scene in "Payback":

Apocalypse Now Reference

Black Ops’ 10th mission "Crash Site" reveals a fondness for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now”. There’s no appearance by Marlon Brando as Capt. Kurtz, but you do get treated to a lot of imagery inspired by the 1979 movie. Look for a burning Huey copter, the bridge of the final US outpost and a herd of water buffalo. You’ll also hear two classics from the Rolling Stones: “Sympathy for the Devil” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” playing from the boat’s radio as you fight for your life.

Mannequin Mystery

If you and your fellow soldiers manage to lop the heads off of all the mannequins in a certain amount of time, you’ll get a nice reward. Here’s the catch: No one knows how long you have to decapitate the mannequins. Nor does anyone seem to know what the reward is (some speculate it unlocks another zombie mode). If you have the answer, don’t be shy about sharing it!

OMFG, Double Rainbow!!

The double rainbows in front of the Nuketown map are likely Treyarch’s tribute to a YouTube video that caught fire in 2010. Watch it and you’ll understand the reference. You’ll also get a lot of laughs. Or maybe you’ll have a religious experience/orgasm like the guy in the video. Btw, check what it says on the school bus.

Mysterious Mission Objectives

SPOILER ADVISORY, you’ve been warned! Alex Mason is losing it by the last 2 missions of the Black Ops campaign. He experiences hallucinations and paranoia. You’ll feel his pain as the game infects you with some of Mason’s mental maladies. During either the ‘Revelations’ or ‘Redemption’ missions, pause the game. Instead of objectives, you’ll see the digits that sent Mason off his nut.

Remember the Russian?

This egg is a call back to Modern Warfare 2’s fourth mission where Vladimir Makarov reminds you, “Remember, no Russian.” In “Executive Order”, the fourth mission of Black Ops, another covert soldier is preparing to sneak into a Soviet launch base when a nearby character says, “I hope your time in Vorkuta helped your Russian, Mason.” Real black ops agents don’t believe in coincidence.

You’ll be prompted to press a button, resulting in accessing a 1960s-era OS. Play around with the computer a bit by entering commands and you’ll make some interesting discoveries. (Typing “Help” will give you an inkling of what’s possible with this antique.) Btw, now is a good time to plug in a USB keyboard if you have one.

Escape From Main Menu

Strapped to the interrogation chair and surrounded by instruments of torture, covert agent Alex Mason can’t escape, right? Looking helplessly at your bound limbs there’s no hope of getting free. Then again, if you can play as Mason in the menu screen, anything’s possible. Pull your controller’s Left and Right triggers in this sequence: L, R, L, R, L, R, L, R, L, R. If you’re quick enough, Mason will bust out of the chair. Then you’re free to check out that room.

Group 935’s logo is on the reels and they can be found in the following locations: Samantha’s Room -- Check the bed, table and rocking chair. Samantha’s Room (Destroyed) -- Check the over-turned table or near the window, as well as the bed. Dentist’s Office -- On one of the counters or next to the chair by the cart. Search for the open tape dock, again press ‘X’. If you followed orders it should close and after a few seconds you’ll notice the screen shaking. Give it a couple of moments then give ‘X’ another press. The Thundergun should now be yours!
